How to Choose the Perfect Artwork for Above Your Bed
It's been 1.73 years since you moved in and it's finally time to tackle that empty wall space above your bed! You know the one – it's been begging for some artistic attention! Let's make your sleeping quarters the envy of Pinterest. But how do you choose the perfect piece of art for your bedroom wall? Here are some tips to help you decide.
1. Size Does Matter!
First, consider the size of your bed. You don't want your artwork to look lost in the abyss, nor do you want an awkwardly oversize monster! As a general rule, for a single painting or art print, it should be roughly two-thirds the width of your bed.
2. Set the Mood with Color
Ah, colour – the magician of the interior design world. Think about the colour scheme of your bedroom. What colours are already there? What kind of mood are you going for? Do you want to include some calming blues and greens? Or something bold and adventurous with punchy reds and yellows? The goal here is for your artwork to harmonize with your room's current colour palette.
3. Mix or Match? Are you a fan of consistency, or do you love a fun mix-and-match approach? Choose art that ties in with your existing decor style.
4. Have a little fun!
Don't be afraid to introduce a piece that adds an unexpected twist. Everyone loves a little of rebellion in the bedroom. But please no "his" and "hers" signs!
5. Personal Connection.
Your bedroom is your sanctuary, so it's the ideal place for art that resonates with you on a personal level. The connection you feel with your chosen piece is key.
6. Mind the Windows and Lighting
If your bedroom wall has windows or lighting fixtures, take them into account when selecting and placing your artwork. Ideally, your art should complement these features rather than fight with them.
7. Wall Art in a Set of 2 or Set of 3
Why settle for one piece of art when you can have two or three? My personal favourite is a set of 3, since an odd number in design always looks best. Choose pieces that work well together and they can also tell a visual story. Experiment with different sizes and frames to create a perfect balance.
8. Bring in some Texture
Take some inspiration from the pros. Interior designers love texture and layers. Try an original painting for your bedroom. Art that has some depth to it will create dimension and intrigue.

Quick Guide
The main points to think about when deciding how big your bedroom art should be:
- the width of your bed/ headboard.
- the height of your bedroom wall
- any windows or lighting
- consider a single large artwork or a set of 2 or 3.
- the colours and art style should compliment your current space
