Portable Wall Mural - Tauranga Crossing

There’s something very satisfying about creating artwork that doesn’t just live in one place… but can move, evolve, and have a second life somewhere else.

This movable wall mural for Tauranga Crossing’s Social Room is exactly that.

After the success of the Playpark mural I painted, the team wanted to continue that same visual language, artwork that is grounded in Aotearoa’s native flora, layered, textural, and full of life... but this time the mural needed to be portable. Flexible. Future-proof.

So instead of painting directly onto a wall, I created a duo of portable mural panels using ACM boards. (And painting on these? Buttery smooth. 10/10 experience.)

Designed to Move

These moveable wall mural panels were designed with adaptability in mind. Right now, they are installed in the Tauranga Crossing Social Room, but they can also be reimagined... as a screen, a shopfront hoarding, or standalone artworks in a completely different space.

It’s a really smart way to approach large-scale artwork in commercial environments. You still get the impact of a mural, but with the added benefit of being able to shift, reuse, and evolve the work over time.

A Cohesive Visual Story

Visually, this piece continues the same direction as the Playpark mural, keeping things cohesive across Tauranga Crossing. I expanded the colour palette and pulled a few new elements in such as the Tūī, who really is the star of the show here!

Not just a beautiful bird, but one that carries meaning, it's often associated with confidence, harmony, and connection. It felt like the perfect addition to anchor the piece.

The design draws inspiration from the native bush of the local Kaimai region, featuring references to harakeke, tānekaha, mingimingi, māpou, and more. Subtle textures from my mark-making process bring depth and movement, creating that balance between structure and looseness that I love to explore.

One Artwork, Multiple Lives

This mural was also designed as a diptych, meaning the panels can sit together as one cohesive piece or be split and used separately. Again, it comes back to that idea of flexibility... creating work that can adapt to different spaces and uses over time.

Because good design doesn’t just look good… it works hard too!

It’s been such a joy continuing this collaboration with TX and exploring new ways to bring art into commercial spaces.
