It's been such an honour to be a part of the Tiahuia project by the Tauranga City Council, painting a bright and colourful abstract mural that celebrates the values and incredible work of the Tauranga Women’s Refuge.
The concept was inspired by the brief to honour a “superwoman” through an exterior mural, weaving the refuge’s core values into a vibrant, abstract design.
Guided by the four foundational values of the Tauranga Women’s Refuge:
- Awhi (support)
- Tautoko (guidance)
- Manaaki (kindness)
- Aroha (compassion)
This mural is a visual testament to their mission. Each abstract element represents these values, blending together in harmony to tell a powerful story of care, respect, and empowerment.
I began the creative process by contemplating the meaning of each value, sketching abstract shapes and symbols as I meditated on each beautiful value. Through bold, colourful forms and composition, the final design mirrors the refuge’s kindness, empathy, and unwavering support for wāhine in need.
The result is a striking abstract mural that not only adds vibrancy to Tauranga’s city but also serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the community it represents. Painting this bright mural was an incredible experience, and I’m very proud to have created a piece that reflects such an important kaupapa.
