Playground Mural - Tauranga Crossing Mall

I recently wrapped up this colourful mural at Tauranga Crossing. It's tucked away in the Playpark playground which is downstairs by the food court. It might be my smallest mural to date, but she is totally packed with heart!

This design is inspired by the native bush that surrounds the site, the lush ecosystem that is the Kaimai Ranges. The team and I wanted the artwork to celebrate the richness of Aotearoa’s flora and bring a little slice of the local landscape into the indoor space.

The mural features bold native species like kōkako mushrooms, tawa, kōwaowao, mingimingi, clematis (puawananga), tānekaha, and māpou. The use of these endemic plants, connect the commercial environment to the whenua (land) it stands on.

Using earthy greens, warm ochres (with pops of blue and orange), I designed the palette to complement the tones already in the playground, the warm timber, green flooring and charcoal accents.

I also included a few subtle textures pulled straight from my mark-making practice, giving it depth and a sense of movement.

This playground mural gives a gentle nod to the nature that surrounds the area.

As a Tauranga mural artist, I love bringing colour and storytelling into public spaces. If you're looking for someone to add some personality to your blank wall, do get in touch!
