When Sara from Dime Friday, a hair salon in Mount Maunganui, approached me with the idea of creating a mural, I couldn’t have been more excited. She had seen my underpaintings from my original works and envisioned a textured, abstract mural that would bring warmth and personality to her new salon’s interior.
Straight away I knew this would be a fun challenge.
With the salon’s interior fit-out already designed, we worked within a tone-on-tone warm color palette to complement the space. I began the process by applying joint compound to the wall, smearing it to create areas of texture that would bring depth and character to the final piece.
Once the texture paste had fully dried, I started layering on paint, experimenting with various techniques to achieve the perfect balance of abstract forms and subtle movement. The result is a textured mural that feels both organic and intentional. I love how the mural sits so well with Dime Friday’s vibe: cool, modern and dripping with style.
I’m thrilled with how it turned out, but even more so, I love that Sara and her team are just as happy with the final look.
The mural and salon have also been featured in Homestyle magazine.
