I recently had the honour of painting a vibrant mural at the Waitaha Reserve skate park in Welcome Bay, for the Tauranga City Council. Better yet, this project was a collaboration and I got to work alongside fellow Bay of Plenty mural artist, Millie Pidwell also known as Murals by Millie.
This project resonated with me, not just as an artist, but as a Mum with kids who will one day play in this beautiful new playground and skate park.
We wanted to create something bold, vibrant and full of personality. We also wanted to bring a connection back to the natural landscape that the Reserve is built on, which is highlighted by the native birds and florals in our design. The mural features playful patterns, bright colors and local flora and fauna. It’s all about celebrating diversity and creating a welcoming space for everyone.
How It All Came Together
It all started with an artist call out from Creative Bay of Plenty asking for designs that inspire inclusion and empowerment, especially for young females who are into skateboarding. As soon as I read the brief, I knew Millie and I had to submit. Being a local Bay of Plenty artist with strong ties to Welcome Bay, this project felt like such a perfect fit. I spent years studying at Toi Ohomai, just down the road, and now being able to contribute something meaningful to this community feels like coming full circle.
The Story Behind the Design
We wanted this mural to reflect the vibrant and diverse community of Welcome Bay. The colour palette and bold patterns are fun and playful, and the native birds and plants give a nod to the local area.
And this is just the start! We’ve also been commissioned to paint the new skateboard ramp in 2025, and I can’t wait to bring more color and energy to the space.
